Exquisite architecture, beautifully proportioned rooms, graceful decor &#8211; the very experience of being in those rooms was integrated into appreciating the art. Together, Ruth Clarke (Inclusion Associate) and myself had a shared vision, to bring music and movement into the Museum to nourish conversation and connection: between the different art forms, between participants and paintings, between confidence and agency.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11035 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.10-300x233.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.10-300x233.png 300w, https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.10-768x596.png 768w, https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.10.png 975w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>The creative practice<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In this programme, to fully appreciate an artwork means you slow down, become comfortable, and open yourself to heightened sense-based awareness.\u00a0 In order to move into the focused attention these pai<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ntings merit, you need to allow yourself time to take in the space you<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0are in, the company, your own state of being.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Our group participants<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0bec<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">me increasingly skilled at appreciating processes of subjective and open-ended engagement.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The sessions, both at the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">M<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">useum and in the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">community, setting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0never didactic lectures<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0&#8211; the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0rich\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">experiential<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0where what lies\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">within oneself is key to unlocking what lies <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">within the painting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>A closed Museum<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">What happens then, when the museum closes its doors, the team is dispersed, and the groups can no longer meet<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">?<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0 It was never going to be enough to direct our participants to a website and invite them to scroll alone through an emptied museum &#8211; allowing us to continue looking and sharing togethe<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body A\">r<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body A\">. Printed copies of the paintings were sent out to all participants and to our partner o<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body A\">rganisations.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body A\">However,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body A\">\u00a0we realised there wasn\u2019t the infrastructure to reach every person in the partner organisations<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body A\">\u00a0and we wanted to create an offer that could be accessed by anyone at\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body A\">any time<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227170248 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body A\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW227170248 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11037 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.45-300x236.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"404\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.45-300x236.png 300w, https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.45-768x605.png 768w, https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.45.png 966w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 404px) 100vw, 404px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Growing the practice &#8211; creating films<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">We decided to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLDhExi_byiwk6YKa0oSgfNtzsTTQc72w0\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">create a series of films looking at some of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">favourite<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0paintings<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0 We wanted to stay true to core values: shared looking anchored by building relaxed presence, calm focus, and ample opportunities for self-expression.\u00a0 We particular<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ly wanted people to feel we were still right there with them. Firmly continuing our invitation to enjoy slow<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and embodied looking, the films begin with a guided relaxation,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">then take you into<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0looking at the painting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0end<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0with a balanced amount of information about the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">artist and the artwork.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=PLDhExi_byiwk6YKa0oSgfNtzsTTQc72w0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sidestepping the loss of the ambience of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">M<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">useum<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">endeavoured<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to bring the essence of the Fitzwil<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">iam\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to everyone, wherever they were, just as they were.\u00a0 We wanted to support individuals in their own spaces to enjoy\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">rt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and through art become present, connected, and creative.\u00a0 We wanted to continue to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">familiarize<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0people with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the spaces and places of the paintings.\u00a0 We\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">emphasised the power of a painting\u2019s qualities and stories to be experienced and felt by the viewer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11040 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.35-300x235.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"394\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.35-300x235.png 300w, https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.35-768x601.png 768w, https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.35.png 977w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/2020\/05\/12\/relax-look-and-imagine-objects-in-focus\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">films were launched on the 1st of May<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">seven<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0films are available to watch on the University of Cambridge Museums YouTube\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">site. Already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=R8u1g_2kFQM&amp;t=16s\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Springtime by Monet<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0has been viewed over a thousand times, and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WY6I_ZmxI2A&amp;list=PLDhExi_byiwk6YKa0oSgfNtzsTTQc72w0&amp;index=2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">A Gust of Wind<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Renoir<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s nearing a similar figure<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. We began with sendin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">g one film weekly to our partner organisations.\u00a0 At the same time, to fully \u201ctest\u201d the efficacy and value of the films, we decided to also send the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to discerning friends<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and to other groups we were involved in that might value such an invitation.\u00a0 Never shy of constructive feedback, we invited people to share their experiences with us, and waited to see what\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">they<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0would make of the experience.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Response and feedback<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Apart from watching the numbers of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">film\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">viewing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0steadily climbing we were delighted by the personal responses shared with us.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">We\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">asked: <\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u2018<\/span><\/b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">How did watching the film make you feel? It was accessible and open to me to become part of the narrative that this painting holds, and I could add myself in to the story&#8230; creating something new. I was insi<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">de the painting itself, and I was walking among the trees on the grass. Some of us commented on how peaceful it seemed even though it was such a fluid piece of work<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u2026.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Residents<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0are starting to get into the swing of the focus\/ relaxation element on the video<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">and\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span smile and just forget the day<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">and melt into the picture<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Another gentleman felt he can now access the pictures and relaxation when he needs to &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">feeling \u2018<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">the talking on it was calming<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">and made a hell of a difference<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">We learned that one of the ladies felt it did make a difference thinking that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">you had made this for her<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Her husband, although visual<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0impaired, could share the experience with her by listening to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the voice.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hey now listen to the films twice a day<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">she\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">can talk about\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">them\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">It has opened up conversations that they have not had they moved outside once their oils were in tubes. It was lovely to hear the relationship of t<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">he characters to the painter and that this was his garden too at the end, after my own experiences were allowed full\u202fbloom.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">My understanding has shifted<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">because I feel like there is a piece of me inside this painting now. As if I have walked in the garden myself\u2026<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">And<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">I am familiar with the painting and have studied Monet.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">What your experience did was to create a new memory, it stirred imagination and made the painting more personal \u2013 in this way it was a genuinely new experience to me.<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">It would enrich everybody\u2019s understanding of how to look at paintings through their own\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">soul and personal experience.\u202f<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Speaking specifically about\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=R8u1g_2kFQM&amp;list=PLDhExi_byiwk6YKa0oSgfNtzsTTQc72w0&amp;index=1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Monet\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Springtime<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0one viewer wrote<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u2018<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Without sounding too grand I would even consider this a masterclass on how to look at paintings (rather than \u2018to study\u2019).\u202f In essence, you took art and turned it on its head to make it rele<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">vant and a wholesome (self) human experience.\u202f Light, vibrant and fresh \u2013 the way Monet intended!<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11039 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.22-300x233.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"388\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.22-300x233.png 300w, https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.22-768x597.png 768w, https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screenshot-2020-07-28-at-14.27.22.png 978w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 388px) 100vw, 388px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Final thoughts\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Some people describe\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">watching<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the films, some feel they are\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">listening<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0 In every instance, we see that people are describing their\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">experience<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of the paintings, and how that has affected them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Whichever<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0way, we know that people are enjoying\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the paintings directly, viscerally and in a relaxed manner that is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">bringing them pleasure, comfort and inspiration.\u00a0 Whether or not art is familiar or new, the films were able to take the widest range of participant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0into\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">personal and import experiences of the paintings.\u00a0 We have always intended for the Fitzwilliam Museum<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">open<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0like a treasure trove to people, most of whom would not have considered the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">M<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">useum as a source of inspiration.
