Conservation of a Dividing Engine"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Over the summer, staff at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sites.hps.cam.ac.uk\/whipple\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Whipple Museum of the History of Science<\/a> are preparing for their exhibition <em>\u2018Astronomy and Empire\u2019 <\/em>opening in October 2017.\u00a0 Kirstie Williams, University of Cambridge Museums Organics Conservator, was asked to conserve the Dividing Engine for the exhibition.<\/h2>\n<p>First off, what\u2019s a Dividing Engine? A dividing engine is a device that is used to mark graduations on a measuring instrument, for example the lines on a ruler, protractor or sextant.<\/p>\n<p>When presented with an object 1181mm tall and 935mm wide you know it is going to take a while to conserve.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7752\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7752\" style=\"width: 1260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7752\" src=\"http:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Dividing-Enging-before-treatment.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1260\" height=\"696\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7752\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dividing Engine before treatment<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The dividing engine had a thick layer of dust and was tarnished across the surface, making it impossible to see the details of the 360\u00b0 scale running around the inside of the large dial. Over the course of four weeks I carefully cleaned the object, the metal elements were cleaned using a mild conservation abrasive called Prelim. This was applied using a cotton wool swab and then any residue removed using white spirit. The wooden areas of the object were brush vacuumed and cleaned with a micro fibre cloth. Whilst cleaning the object graffiti was re-discovered with the name \u2018Vernier\u2019 and \u2018&#8212;dex\u2019.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7754\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7754\" style=\"width: 1260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7754\" src=\"http:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Grafitti-on-the-Dividing-Engine.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1260\" height=\"696\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7754\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grafitti on the Dividing Engine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After standing for 38hours (not all at one time!) the conservation was accomplished.<\/p>\n<p>Although the dividing engine has been conserved, the metal elements aren\u2019t \u2018shiny\u2019.
