{"id":9464,"date":"2018-08-15T09:42:04","date_gmt":"2018-08-15T08:42:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/?p=9464"},"modified":"2020-09-04T15:31:20","modified_gmt":"2020-09-04T14:31:20","slug":"people-watching-the-role-of-a-volunteer-visitor-observer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/2018\/08\/15\/people-watching-the-role-of-a-volunteer-visitor-observer\/","title":{"rendered":"People watching: the role of a volunteer visitor observer"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/volunteer-visitor-observer-the-fitzwilliam-museum\">Volunteer Visitor Observer role<\/a> has now been running for almost six months, so we decided that this was a good time to have a chat with some of our volunteers to find out what they have been doing.<\/h2>\n<p>The role supports a research project at the Fitzwilliam Museum, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/research\/please-do-not-touch\">&#8220;Please Do Not Touch&#8221;<\/a>,\u00a0which aims to understand the effectiveness of the methods we use to deter visitors from touching the collections. How can we best protect the collections from touching, while at the same time still making them accessible to visitors and without hindering visitors&#8217; enjoyment? The project would be impossible without the help of visitor observer volunteers. Project coordinator Helena Rodwell and Niki Hughes\u00a0chatted with volunteers Judith Chisholm, Ted Rowe and Tejaswini Kulkarni to discover how they spend their time in the Museum.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9472\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9472\" style=\"width: 801px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9472\" src=\"https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Ted-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"801\" height=\"601\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9472\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ted stationed in the Cyprus gallery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>What is your role at the Museum and how long have you been there?<\/h3>\n<p><em>Ted:<\/em>\u00a0My role at the museum is to observe certain artefacts, and note down the ways in which the visitors interact with them, especially if they touch the potentially fragile artefact. I have been there for approximately three months.<\/p>\n<h3>How did you find out about it?<\/h3>\n<p><em>Judith:\u00a0<\/em>I\u2019ve been volunteering with more than one museum and I can\u2019t honestly remember how I started!\u00a0 My first volunteering for the University of Cambridge Museums was for the Twilight at the Museums event, stopping people outside to ask them if they would fill in a questionnaire.\u00a0 It was a chilly February evening, but it didn\u2019t put me off!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9469\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9469\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9469\" src=\"https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Judith-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"583\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9469\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Judith on duty<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>What attracted you to it?<\/h3>\n<p><em>Tejaswini:<\/em>\u00a0I am very fond of museums and I am keen on\u00a0understanding\u00a0the curation process and activities. My interest in art and art history attracted me to the Fitzwilliam Museum.\u00a0The idea of getting involved with a project and being in the museum environment not just as a visitor was attractive as it gives me an opportunity to observe the activities of a museum from a different perspective.<\/p>\n<h3>Tell us about a typical day \u2013 what does your role involve?<\/h3>\n<p><em>Tejaswini:<\/em> I volunteer for about two and a half hours each day. Typically it gives me about forty five minutes in each of the three galleries I am assigned for the day. In every gallery I am given a list of objects and I am to observe the visitor&#8217;s interaction with these\u00a0objects. I record the observations like-\u00a0whether they touch it or not;\u00a0is the touch on purpose or an\u00a0accident, what are the age groups, directions they come from, whether they are\u00a0in groups or alone etc.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9473\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9473\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Tejaswini_2018.05.25.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9473\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tejaswini stationed in the antiquities gallery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>What is the weirdest thing you have seen a visitor do?<\/h3>\n<p><em>Judith:<\/em>\u00a0I have seen people touching the collections on display.\u00a0 I saw a small group have a talk on some of the pictures in the Italian Gallery and afterwards a couple of people went up to one of the paintings and leaned on the furniture to get a closer look.<\/p>\n<h3>What is your favourite object or gallery at the Fitzwilliam Museum?<\/h3>\n<p><em>Ted:\u00a0<\/em>My favourite object in the Fitzwilliam would have to be the large stone sarcophagus in the Egyptian gallery, as I am interested in ancient Egyptian culture and religion.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9471\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9471\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9471\" src=\"https:\/\/www.museums.cam.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Ted-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ted<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Has your perception of museums changed since you started volunteering?<\/h3>\n<p><em>Tejaswini:<\/em>\u00a0Yes it has, and for better. Since I visit repeatedly now, I realise how much effort and care goes into preserving,\u00a0exhibiting and managing the objects and the museum premise. I also come across various activities being run for school children and art enthusiasts which are so helpful and encouraging.<\/p>\n<p><em>Judith:<\/em>\u00a0Yes.\u00a0 I am more aware of the gallery design and the subtlety of the positioning of objects: why furniture is placed where it is to protect the painting or direct visitors in a certain direction.\u00a0 I had never noticed the kickboards below furniture before. I also appreciate the provision that both the Fitzwilliam and the Polar Museum make to encourage children to visit and take part. I volunteer with the Little Explorers at the Polar.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ted:<\/em>\u00a0My perception of museums has definitely changed since I began the role as a volunteer.
