This online course introduces learners to the art of choosing the right tree or shrub to suit its garden setting. With a look at how trees and shrubs grow, learners will find out how and why to prune woody plants to get the desired effect. With information about the right time, tools and techniques for pruning as well as plant specific guidance, learners will complete the course feeling confident about the maintenance of woody plants.
Sessions can be attended singly or as the complete series and no previous experience is needed. We will cover the principles of essential horticultural topics, as well as the science that underpins these principles, with learning consolidated through online quizzes and group discussions.
Sandie Cain joined the Garden team in 2018 as Horticultural Learning Co-ordinator with responsibility for the Schools Garden and horticultural learning. She studied horticulture at Plumpton College and Bicton College, and was previously head gardener of a Victorian walled garden producing vegetables, fruit, micro herbs and edible flowers for a Michelin Star restaurant. Sandie is passionate about horticulture with a special interest in kitchen gardens.
