Who

Join staff from the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences and Cambridge University Library for this hands-on session exploring rocks from the Isla Santiago. Find out how scientists from the Earth Science Department used Darwin's notebooks to follow in his footsteps, handle volcanic rocks from Isla Santiago and learn about Charles Darwin’s work as a geologist.

Important information:

  • These workshops are suitable for ages 5+ but younger siblings are welcome to come along
  • Please get in touch if you have any questions about this event by emailing Lindsey Jonesman lw442@cam.ac.uk

This event is being hosted as part of Cambridge University Libraries' exhibition, Darwin in Conversation. Charles Darwin’s name is so famous, still so constantly invoked in debates on evolution, society, and religion, that the man himself is easily overlooked.

About the exhibition

Darwin’s letters sit alongside his famous publications, providing a more rounded, personal view of Darwin. A prolific correspondent, he wrote and received over 15,000 letters in his lifetime. Cambridge University Library’s upcoming exhibition uses this correspondence to uncover little-known aspects of Darwin’s life

The exhibition is free, and open 9am-6.30pm Monday-Friday and 9am-4.30pm Saturdays. These workshops are being held immediately next to our exhibition space, so you are welcome to enjoy Darwin in Conversation before or after your workshop.

Registration: If the session you wish to attend is fully booked, you can email lw442@cam.ac.uk to be added to our waiting list.

Accessibility: Step-free access with slight gradient; narrowest point into the building is 82.5cm; accessible toilet; baby changing facilities; accessible parking
