Floral nectar spurs are tubular organs that protrude from the flowers of many different plant species, including several that can be found at Cambridge University Botanic Garden. The nectar at the bottom of the spur is difficult to reach, but many specialised pollinators have evolved elongated mouthparts, giving them privileged access to this hidden reservoir of sugar. This talk explores the curious world of the spur, showcasing colourful flowers and bizarre pollinators. The evolution of spurs will be discussed, leading to the focal question of my research: how do nectar spurs develop?
